Fashion or Necessity

As I am finished with my workout routine and walked into the shower area, I had a thought pop into my mind, which had nothing to do with exercising…I have heard of and seen few women who go to college or university until a husband-to-be comes to whisks them away…What I am talking about are women, who are going to school not because they plan to have careers or work in professional job, but rather because they are not married yet and everyone else is a student, why not them too!!! Is the society pressuring these women, who aren’t interested in education, to pursue an academic life, so that when they say “oh I am a student” and not “oh I am just working and staying at home till I get married” people look at them more favorably!!!  Are women seeking education for their own personal improvement and advancement as individuals or they really trying to occupy their time until they get married and then just be stay-at-home wives or mothers?…Is education looked upon as a necessity or fashionable pursuit?…If the intention of a woman for going to college is just to keep herself busy until she is married, should she really put herself in a financial debt so she can just to put a facade?

    Khadra,

It is possible some people go to university to enhance their understanding of the world and for their personal improvements. It is also possible that they go to school to have a career and then put it on hold to raise a family. However, I just cannot imagine anyone that will incur debt to put up a front. I mean if like you said their purpose is to pass time and entertain themselves before settling down. I can definitely think of a lot more entertaining things one can do to pass time than pulling off all niters to make assignment deadlines.

Hey sis didn’t get around to reading much except this one post but I felt obliged to post.

Alhamdullilah I have put myself through school have a career now and do not have a penny of debt from schooling. I am however one of those women who’d prefere to stay at home, be it to focus on aspects of deen and bettering myself or be it one day to raise a family. I am glad I went to school( and my parents weren’t having me stay at home doing nothing).
I do have a career in case I am ever in a position to find the need to work. however I think I would like to focus on the most important job of all that is critical to the proper function of our society. A mother, wife, teacher, councellor, judge and more in one. a homemaker. May Allah swt ease for me whatever path brings me Closer to Him. Ameen

I doubt however that this the majority of women…

First of all, thank you Najma and Muslimah for taking time to respond to my blog, I appriciate it…Najma, well I am sure one can imagine more entertaining ways of spending ones time other than going to school and stressing about projects and deadlines…And Muslimah, I couldn’t have agreed with you more, and there is nothing wrong with being stay at home person and it wasn’t my intention to imply that…What I aimed to convey was whether we as a society have put certain pressure on some girls who might not be interested in seeking an acedmic education…Women/girls in larger number than Men/boys have pursued education degrees and career opportunities in our somali community…So what happened to those people who never saw schooling as “being for them” and if our cultures looks upon them in “down manner” would that be the reason as to people who have really no inclination to utilizing their education or seeking one for purpose of blending in! I hope i made some sense or clarified my intention.

My personal believe on this matter is that education is important because with it comes an informed umma and options…And without a curiousity toward learning we wouldn’t be a strong muslim community and nation…We can pray to Allah to guide to the enlightned path to him and heaven, Ameen…bee bye
